Google fined under EU antitrust rules over Shopping service

Google has been fined 2.42bn euros ($2.7bn; £2.1bn) by the European Commission after it ruled the company had abused its power by promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of search results.

The amount is the regulator’s largest penalty to date against a company accused of distorting the market.

The ruling also orders Google to end its anti-competitive practices within 90 days or face a further penalty.

The US firm said it may appeal.
However, if it fails to change the way it operates the Shopping service within the three-month deadline, it could be forced to make payments of 5% of its parent company Alphabet’s average daily worldwide earnings.

Based on the company’s most recent financial report, that amounts to about $14m a day.

The commission said it was leaving it to Google to determine what alterations should be made to its Shopping service rather than specifying a remedy.

“What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules,” declared Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s Competition Commissioner.

Jeff Bezos Amazon founder beats Bill Gates again in new rich list

According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is now worth $150bn (£113bn).

Jeff Bezos’s net worth has increased by over $60bn in the last 12 months, which makes him the world’s richest man.

This places his worth higher than that of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who has previously topped the rich lists – even at his peak in 1999.

At the time Mr Gates was worth $100bn – which would be around $149bn today, when adjusted for inflation.

Mr Gates is currently in second place with a worth of $95bn, having given away 700 million Microsoft shares and $2.9bn in cash since 1996.

He gave the cash and assets to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg reports.

Mr Bezos says he is selling about $1bn of Amazon stock every year to fund Blue Origin, the project he has founded to develop commercial space travel.

It’s not the first time Jeff Bezos has topped the world’s rich list – in July 2017, he briefly overtook Bill Gates to become the world’s richest man according to Forbes when Amazon’s shares surged – but returned to second place when their value dropped again

The news of Mr Bezos’s wealth came as Amazon prepared for its enormous Prime Day sale on 16 July, which was marred in Europe by worker strikes in Germany, Spain and Poland over working conditions.

Meanwhile two of Amazon’s rivals, Microsoft and Walmart, are set to announce a five-year deal which will see the retailer use the tech giant’s cloud computing technology, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Egypt to regulate popular social media users

In Egypt a new controversial law that will allow the state to regulate social media users has been passed by parliament.

Under the law, a personal social media account, blog or website with more than 5,000 followers could be considered a media outlet and subject to media law.

Critics say the legislation will increase the authorities’ ability to crack down on free speech and dissent.

A number of opposition activists have been arrested in recent months on charges of spreading false news online.

The new law – passed on Sunday by two-thirds of MPs – placed popular accounts on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms under the supervision of Egypt’s media regulator, the Supreme Council for the Administration of the Media.

The council was also given the power to block websites and file criminal complaints against platforms and individuals accused of offences such as “inciting people to violate laws” and “defamation against individuals and religions”.

On Sunday, Human Rights Watch criticised the government’s use of counterterrorism legislation to prosecute activists and journalists.

Laws passed in 2015 make it a crime to publish or promote any news about terrorist incidents that contradicts official statements.

The government has also blocked hundreds of websites since last summer, including those of news outlets, NGOs and human rights groups.

Neither Cattle Colonies Nor Our Lives

Anybody suggesting that we should either surrender our ancestral land to Fulani herdsmen to establish their cattle colonies and ranches, or we will lose our lives, should have his head properly examined. This is because that person is not normal or that his head is not correct. if you miss the previous post read it at utooblog

For Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Nigerians should be better off living with the ranches and colonies than dying through the persisting conflicts.

According to him, “You can only have ancestral attachment when you are alive. If you are talking about ancestral attachment, if you are dead, how does the attachment matter?”

In other words, Femi Adesina is telling us that rather than insist on our ancestral inheritance and lose our lives, we should simply surrender our land to Fulani herdsmen for them to establish their cattle colonies and ranches.

We reject both suggestions outright. We do not support the idea that indigenous people should give up their ancestral inheritance under any circumstance or for whatever guise. How can any reasonable person tell us to give up our ancestral land for cattle colonies and ranches, otherwise we will lose our lives?, which is what Femi Adesina seems to be saying. Unless we are cowards, which we are not, we will resist with the last pint of our blood, than to capitulate and give up our land to colonizers or occupation forces.

Throughout history, ancestral inheritance, and in particular land, is held very dear and precious by all manner of people. It is not just at the micro level, but at the macro level as well.

Individuals fight and kill themselves because of land. Nations fight each other because of land. They establish Army, Navy, Air Force, etc., armed with sophisticated weapons, to fight and defend their territorial boundaries. No country will give up any piece of its land or territory without putting up a fight.

Why then does Femi Adesina think we will equally give up our ancestral land to Fulani invaders to establish their cattle colonies and ranches, else they will simply slaughter us? Does he think that we are cowards, or that the Fulani have the monopoly of violence? Or is it because their brother is now in power? But will he remain there forever?

When it comes to the battlefield, are the Fulani invincible? Yes, they fought and defeated many of their neighbours during their jihad of the nineteenth century and imposed the Islamic faith. But that was then. This time around, they will never succeed.

Now that the Fulani are coming out in their true colour, we will no longer fold our arms and stand by, watching while they we will continue to slaughter us like cows, take over our land and establish their so-called cattle colonies and ranches.

We will fight back. We will defend ourselves. Self defence is not sinful. General Theophilus Danjuma has told us what to do: to rise and defend ourselves and no longer wait or look on government to defend us. because the government has failed, or are even colluding with the invaders to slaughter us.

FAAC Deadlock And The Nonpayment Of Salaries

Faac Deadlock. It is time to separate men from the boys. It is time to know the state governments that are good managers of economic resources, state governments that are capable of paying their bills without waiting on the federal government.

Every month, our state governors or their representatives, travel to Abuja, the nation’s capital, cap in hand, to ask for crumbs that fall from the master’s table. They call it revenue allocation from the Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Any time the states fail to receive what they believe is their due, they will lie comatose, unable to do anything. Every activity of government will be paralysed because there will be no money in the kitty to render any service.

Some two weeks ago, it was reported that the FAAC meeting in Abuja was deadlocked because of certain disagreements regarding the actual amount of money to be remitted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the nation’s revenue spinning agency, for sharing by the three levels of Nigerian government – the federal, state and local governments.

As such, civil servants at these three levels of government were told not to expect payment of their June 2018 salaries any time early, because the expected revenue for distribution from the Federation Account was not forthcoming.

It was a surprise when it was reported that the Enugu State Government had already paid the June 2018 salaries to its civil servants by the 23rd of that month, without waiting to receive its share of revenue from the Federal Government.

Many people then began to wonder and to ask how did Enugu State Government manage to do this? This is because Enugu State is not an oil producing state. It is among states that are at the lowest wrung of the ladder in revenue allocation from the Federation Account. The state also does not have many viable commercial and industrial establishments that would have been yielding huge revenues to it.

The simple answer is that Enugu State government was able to pay its workers as a result of prudent financial management as well as its commitment to the welfare of its workforce. In other words, if the authorities of the state government had not been very prudent in managing the little resources at their disposal, and if they had not had the interest of their workers at heart, they would not have succeeded in paying their workers the June 2018 salaries.

The state government would have been among the many other states in the country now blaming their failure to pay their workers on the Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC), and by extension, the Federal Government, for not releasing their statutory allocation from the federal revenue account.

We must therefore commend and congratulate Enugu State Government, and in particular, the State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for this great feat.

But then, we need to question a federal arrangement where its component units are always incapacitated each time there is a problem at the centre. In a true federalism, state governments are semi-autonomous political units, having their distinct identities. They do not always depend on the government at the centre for everything.

State governments are not like a baby would depend on her mother sulking milk from her breast such that any time the mother decides to remove the baby’s mouth from the breast, she will begin to cry. Every state government should be able to stand on its own, having its own sources of revenue, independent of the government at the centre.

But here in Nigeria, our federalism is a ruse. The federal government is omnipotent, very powerful, and controls all resources. The federating units are mere appendages of the central government. They have no independent existence. They rely on the federal government for everything they do. The federal government collects virtually all revenues accruing to the country and later begins to dish out as handouts to the states. This is abnormal.

That’s why we are in full support of those currently calling for the restructuring of the country. Nigeria should not continue to be governed as a unitary state where the centre is very powerful and controls most of the nation’s resources, while the state governments, are left with nothing, but owill always kowtow before the almighty federal government in order to have their own existence. It does not make for healthy existence, and even kills the competitive spirit.

“NBC has taken the decision to curb the continued breach of the Electoral Act and the Broadcasting Code on Political Broadcast. Akinwunmi Ambode assist 50 Nigerian football fans stranded In Russia

Fortunately Akinwunmi Ambode, the Lagos State Governor has assisted 50 Nigerian football fans, who were stranded in Moscow, Russia. At the moment we cannot verify that this covers the total numbers of stranded fans.

We brought you a report on utooblog on how some Nigerians were stranded in Russia as a result of scam.

An eyewitness, Nnamdi Odimegwu disclosed this in a social media post noting that over 50 Nigerians found it difficult returning home because they did not have return air tickets. Odimegwu, however, said succour came their way when Ambode, who is a member of the federal government delegation to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, met them at the airport.

According to him, this is not a political campaign for him, but just appreciating a good and kind gesture by one of our noble Politicians in Nigeria.

The post read in part:

“I had a pick-up arrangement today at the airport in Moscow and had a rare privilege of meeting the Governor of Lagos State, the most populous and commercial Hub of Nigeria. “I quickly introduced myself while I waited for my pick-up arrangement to come out.

We had a small chat and exchanged knowledge and wisdom while I waited. “He bade me farewell as his pick-up arrangement had arrived. After a few minutes, my pick-up arrived as well. So, we set out to the car park. As soon as we came out of the airport, I saw a crowd of over 50 Nigerians who had been stranded at the airport for between 10 and 15 days now.

In their middle was this same man, Ambode. As soon as he sighted me, he quickly called my attention to assist. It was a pathetic state and a lot of words both pleasant and unpleasant were being exchanged. “Then, Ambode did something that amazed me.

He showed solidarity and quickly pledged to send all 50 stranded Nigerians home and assigned me to oversee the transfers and procurement of new tickets to send them home.” He confirmed that 19 out of this 50 “are already on air to Lagos Nigeria. The remaining 31 are leaving this evening. Ambode also fed them all as he gave them cash to eat while they waited for their tickets to fly home.

New Research: One Orange a day keeps poor eyesight away

New research have discovered that People who regularly eat one orange per day slash their chances of developing macular degeneration by more than 60%.

An orange a day keeps bad eyesight away according to the new research.

Macular is an incurable disease, a painless eye condition that leads to the gradual loss of vision, is the most common cause of sight loss in the elderly.

Researchers at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research, in Australia interviewed more than 2,000 adults over 50 and followed them over a 15-year period.

Those who said they ate at least one orange a day had more than a 60% reduced risk of developing late macular degeneration 15 years later compared with those who did not.

Prof Bamini Gopinath, lead researcher from the University of Sydney said: “Essentially we found that people who eat at least one orange every day have a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration compared with people who never eat oranges.

“The data shows that flavonoids found in oranges appear to help protect against the disease.”

Researchers believe it is the flavonoids, an antioxidant in the fruit, that have the effect.

They also looked at other common foods such as tea, red wine and apples and could find no link to preventing macular degenration.

Researchers hoped to understand why eye diseases occur, as well as the genetic and environmental conditions that may threaten vision in conducting their research.

Previous studies focused on the effects of common nutrients such as vitamins C, E and A have on the eyes whereas professor Gopinath’s study took a new approach.

Around 600,000 people in the UK currently have sight loss caused by the incurable disease and around 70,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, equivalent to nearly 200 per day.

Age is the strongest known risk factor and the disease is more likely to occur after the age of 50.

Prof Gopinath added: “Our research is different because we focused on the relationship between flavonoids and macular degeneration.

“Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants found in almost all fruits and vegetables, and they have important anti-inflammatory benefits for the immune system.”

The team looked at everyday foods such as tea, apples, red wine and oranges but the round fruit was the only food source linked to protecting the eyes against the disease.

Barack Obama to re-visit Africa this week, list his favorite African books

The immediate former President of the United States of America, Barack Obama has said he will be coming to Africa this week.

The father of two lovely girls made the announcement via his Facebook page and went on to recommend amazing African literary works he found inspiring. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Americanah, was one of the novels he recommended for summer reading.

He stated below:

This week, I’m traveling to Africa for the first time since I left office – a continent of wonderful diversity, thriving culture, and remarkable stories.

I was proud to visit sub-Saharan Africa more times than any other sitting President, and I’ll return this week to visit Kenya and South Africa. In South Africa, the Obama Foundation will convene 200 extraordinary young leaders from across the continent and I’ll deliver a speech to mark the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. Kenya, of course, is the Obama ancestral home. I visited for the first time when I was in my twenties and I was profoundly influenced by my experiences – a journey I wrote about in my first book, Dreams from My Father.

Over the years since, I’ve often drawn inspiration from Africa’s extraordinary literary tradition. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I’d recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa’s best writers and thinkers – each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
A true classic of world literature, this novel paints a picture of traditional society wrestling with the arrival of foreign influence, from Christian missionaries to British colonialism. A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.

A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi wa Thiong’o
A chronicle of the events leading up to Kenya’s independence, and a compelling story of how the transformative events of history weigh on individual lives and relationships.

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela
Mandela’s life was one of the epic stories of the 20th century. This definitive memoir traces the arc of his life from a small village, to his years as a revolutionary, to his long imprisonment, and ultimately his ascension to unifying President, leader, and global icon. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand history – and then go out and change it.

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
From one of the world’s great contemporary writers comes the story of two Nigerians making their way in the U.S. and the UK, raising universal questions of race and belonging, the overseas experience for the African diaspora, and the search for identity and a home.

The Return by Hisham Matar
A beautifully-written memoir that skillfully balances a graceful guide through Libya’s recent history with the author’s dogged quest to find his father who disappeared in Gaddafi’s prisons.

The World As It Is by Ben Rhodes
It’s true, Ben does not have African blood running through his veins. But few others so closely see the world through my eyes like he can. Ben’s one of the few who’ve been with me since that first presidential campaign. His memoir is one of the smartest reflections I’ve seen as to how we approached foreign policy, and one of the most compelling stories I’ve seen about what it’s actually like to serve the American people for eight years in the White House.

Some Nigerian Fans for Russia 2018 World Cup are stranded and cash-strapped

Reports have that  stranded Nigerians who went to Russia for World cup  camped in front of the Nigerian Embassy in Russia for days now waiting to be relocated back home.

Over 100 Nigerians who went to Russia to watch the world cup and had intentions of staying back to pursue a better life in Moscow, are currently stranded and are seeking ways of coming back home.

Narrating their ordeal to AFP, two brothers said they were approached by fellow Nigerians and told that, should their dreams of soccer stardom not work out once they get to Russia, they would easily find other well-paying jobs in Russia. They paid $300 each for fan’s passport of the World Cup (Fan ID) and round-trip tickets which they used to travel to Russia.

The FAN IDs, which the Russian government issued for foreigners traveling to attend the FIFA World Cup, contains personal data and functions as a visa substitute during the tournament.

However, upon arriving Moscow, the brothers realized that they had been scammed. Speaking, one of them said

“In Nigeria, we were told to call this phone number once in Russia but nobody picked up on the other end,” the younger recalled. They then spent three days in a hotel until they ran out of money. They contacted the Nigerian Embassy for help, but were turned away. “Then we went to a mosque,” the younger said.

They were not allowed to stay overnight but received food from the imam. They then slept at different times in parks in Moscow

“Suddenly, my suitcase was gone,” one of them recalls.

So they returned to the Nigerian Embassy once more and were told to contact the Russian NGO Alternativa, which works with victims of human smuggling and enslavement and is financed solely through donations. Fortunately, Alternativa was able to help the brothers by getting them in touch with Murat Harsiyev and Danier Tagiev, who run a small hostel on the outskirts of Moscow.

Many Nigerians are now at the embassy appealing for help to return home.
